La Playa - A Native Community near Leticia, Amazonas.
The Ticuna and Tocama tribes, each with about 2,000 people, are asking for help. The village does not have drinking water and they are desperate for food and medicine. As of today, there are no cases of Covid, but they are afraid that if the virus gets there, they will die. The red flags you see in the video are a symbol of desperation.
The Ticuna and Tocama Tribes live in the South part of the Colombian Amazon. The Health office (shown in the video) does not even have first aid supplies. They use hammocks to transport the sick.
They have endured extreme flooding events for many weeks which has brought disastrous consequences for the community. Floods have contaminated the water supply, spread disease and destroyed homes and livelihoods. Their economic activities in the floodplains such as agriculture and cattle ranching have been strongly impacted.
